While these colourful, fun, noisy, ready-to-use game buzzers provide an opportunity to bring some light relief to group face to face training events, the main reason we carry them is to encourage trainers to use the much underrated learning tool of ‘testing’ in their learning design and delivery. Neuroscience tells us that adult learners respond and learn better when engaged and believe the learning is personally relevant. They can remember content better when there is a strong emotional attachment to the learning session/environment, and they have practised retrieving it.

Although these buzzers were designed for younger children, adult learners can be playful too (and it’s an important learning strategy). These buzzers are durable, bright and loud enough to create a playful atmosphere in any training room. Each buzzer has a different colour and noise, featuring a loud Boing!, Ding!, Ding Dong!, & Honk! Batteries are included for each of the four buzzers  so each one is ready to use straight out of the box!

  • Use these buzzers as team props if using a game show format to test recall of content and promote collaborative learning
  • Use them with individuals to encourage wide participation and response for learning reviews, brainstorming sessions, or any situations where you want to encourage a clear response
  • Allocate a sound/colour to alternative options and encourage engagement when collecting feedback or choosing between options

Are you regularly using ‘testing’ as one of your learning tools?

If not, here are five sound reasons to do so, all supported by neuroscience research (See the FAQ tab for more information)

  • ‘Pre-testing’ improves retention of knowledge - Use a standard multiple choice format or introduce a more useful model like Learning Loops
  • Testing or retrieval practice is a better learning strategy than no testing or re-reading, as it aids later retrieval.
  • ‘Interleaving’ blocks of different content is a better teaching and learning methodology than working in consecutive singular topic blocks
  • Testing can uncover gaps in knowledge. This is a major feature of Learning Loops
  • Testing can help build the meta skill of ‘Learning to Learn’

Why use games or answer buzzers in adult training?

While these colourful, fun, noisy buzzers provide an opportunity to bring some light relief to group face to face training events, the main reason we carry them is to encourage trainers to use the much underrated learning tool of ‘testing’ in their learning design and delivery. Neuroscience tells us that adult learners respond and learn better when engaged, believe the learning is personally relevant, and can remember content better when there is a strong emotional attachment to the learning session/environment.

Are you regularly using ‘testing’ as one of your learning tools?

If not, here are several sound reasons to do so, all supported by neuroscience research

  • ‘Pre-testing’ improves retention of knowledge - testing people on content they haven’t yet been provided with improves their retention and comprehension. Use these buzzers to set up a simple, fun test to ask participants to provide the answers to questions about content you will present. Use a standard multiple choice format or introduce a more useful model like Learning Loops
  • Testing or retrieval practice is a better learning strategy than no testing or re-reading, as it aids later retrieval. Use these buzzers and some flash cards to review content previously presented, as an end of module review
  • ‘Interleaving’ blocks of different content is a better teaching and learning methodology than working consecutive singular topic blocks. Use the buzzers with tests of questions across multiple topics being taught, and not just a single content block
  • Testing can uncover gaps in knowledge - using these buzzers can encourage learners to provide answers which may reveal gaps in their knowledge that you can then address. This is a major feature of Learning Loops
  • Testing can help build the meta skill of ‘Learning to Learn’. Using these buzzers can build the learning skills of your participants, helping them to understand how they can improve and build their learning power!
  • Testing and retrieval of content can be difficult but overcoming these challenges and developing a resilience when learning something new is an important skill in building capacity to learn more
  • Adults can continue to learn new content, skills, and knowledge as they get older. Neuroscience has proved that you ‘can teach an old dog new tricks’

A key finding from the World Economic Forum  Future of Jobs Report 2020 indicated employers see skills in self-management such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility as rising in prominence in the lead up to 2025, and 94% of business leaders report that they expect employees to pick up new skills on the job, a sharp uptake from 65% in 2018.
