This Learning Uncovered package provides an approach to help uncover everyone’s hidden powers and talents, with activities that encourage colleagues from all parts and all levels of the organisation to connect, share and learn from each other. It’s designed to help participants recognise how different learning and thinking preferences play out in the workplace. This is not about learning other cultures and more about understanding others perspectives based on their preferences. It can be used as a series of independent modules or run consecutively to build a powerful one day development programme around conflict in the workplace or diversity & inclusion.

The materials include an initial set of character sketches which help individuals identify specific areas of difference, and allows them to make comparisons to themselves and people they know.
The four activities that follow can then be used to :

  • Develop skills in time and resource planning and many of the skills needed in administrative, operational and supervisory roles
  • Encourage careful listening, appropriate choice of language, awareness of the ‘state of mind’ of colleagues and a sensitivity and willingness to be flexible in how things are done in order to support others in ways they respond to
  • Applying the listening and coaching skills in activities that encourage and develop big picture thinking, imaginative and creative responses, risk taking, pattern recognition and the exploration of new possibilities
  • Finally bring all these skills together in a complex logical and analytical problem-solving task that requires understanding of the challenge, evaluation of options, selection of an appropriate strategy, management of time and people, monitoring of progress and ongoing process improvement

This is an excellent package to start to really learn about others in the workplace so that you can uncover, recognise and support their needs, use people in the most appropriate roles and help them to challenge themselves in the future.  Many psychometric tests are available to raise awareness of individual differences. However, being aware of preferences is not enough. Awareness has to translate into behavioural change if relationships and results are to improve. In most cases, this requires active practice and reflection, individually or in groups. This package was designed to help learners to hear, see and value different preferences and then use specific activities to develop the associated workplace skills.

The 5 x activities included in this package are listed below:

  1. Character Cards - part of the Working with Conflict Workshop
    Recognising how different learning and thinking preferences play out in the workplace. Learners work with the four character sketches of people they may encounter on any working day.
    Each participant explores their own responses to them by answering a range of supplied questions, before coming together to compare and contrast how each character might provoke a different response, and what might be done to mitigate any challenges or potential conflicts with these characters.
  2. Hollow Square - part of the Learning Squared product
    In the activity, one team acts as a planning team and one as an operational team.
    The task is a representation of the relationship between supervisors and their teams. It highlights the importance of involving operational staff in developing plans that they will be required to implement, clarifying instructions and checking understanding throughout the delegation process.
  3. Colourblind®
    The Colourblind® activity is a communication exercise which develops team building skills and helps teams recognise problems caused with imprecise communication and language.. This communications exercise provides a challenging activity to all levels of leaders, and typically becomes more challenging as the seniority of the group increases, where the ability to really listen and not just 'wait to speak' is often demonstrated.
    The focus of the debrief is to understand more about personal constructs and values and how they differ, even in apparently homogenous groups.
  4. Innovation Images and Mystery Object - part of the Breakthrough Thinking Workshop
    These activities encourage and develop big picture thinking, imaginative and creative responses, risk taking, pattern recognition and the exploration of new possibilities. 
  5. Webmaster®
    This activity challenges teams to solve the initial complex challenge, then rapidly improve their performance by demonstrating strong collaboration amongst team members, effective communication, planning processes and time management skills.
    Webmaster® is a versatile activity which focuses on evaluation of options, selection of an appropriate strategy, management of time and people, monitoring of progress and ongoing process improvement.
