The task sounds simple: assemble metal and rope components to build a physical "web" identical to a provided black-and-white diagram. However, with only one correct solution, teams quickly discover that extensive planning is ineffective. Instead, delegates must apply logic, embrace trial and error, and test their theories in practice early on.

Ideal for groups of up to 30 participants, the Webmaster kit is cleverly divided into three separate sections. This allows you to works as a single group, or split your delegates into sub-teams to work independently before collaborating across groups to connect their structures. What are the main features of the Webmaster task?

Webmaster is a large scale experiential problem solving activity to develop collaboration across teams. Participants are required to assemble a black and white diagram using coloured ropes with specific rules they have to adhere to. Once the diagram is completed, they are then asked to re-do the whole diagram again, under a strict time frame.

What learning does the Webmaster activity offer?

Webmaster explores if participants canwork together in an organised and effective manner, under pressure, to solve a problem. This seemingly ‘easy’ task quickly becomes demanding as participants need to use effective communication and planning and monitoring to adhere to the time frame to improve their performance.

The finished complete structure is approximately 8.7 x 1.5 metres.
If using just the left and right sections it will be around 6 x 1.5 meters.

Webmaster is my go-to activity when I facilitate teamwork and leadership workshops and wish to demonstrate how teams (and their Leaders) can build on their acquired knowledge and experience to maximize results. Very engaging, to the point you might have to "drag" participants away from it, because they want to keep trying to improve!
Excellent quality, as always, and the trainer's manual includes an alternative that introduces the concept of budgeting, and can help teams that might be struggling to find the solution. To me, this is very important, as I have found it to be the case that people learn better from "partial success" than from total failure. It keeps the mind open during debriefing.

Successful training using Webmaster

We successfully utilized the Webmaster Training Program in our recent Recovery and Peace Building Assessment (RPBA) learning experience. Our focus was on effective collaborative partnership interactions among a tripartite gathering of the World Bank, United Nations and the European Union along with several other organizations. Successful RPBA interventions require collective focus and productive work towards a common goal.
Webmaster proved to be an instructive exercise to dramatize collaboration in motion--both what helps and hinders. It generated insightful revelations about leadership, strategic planning, communication, problem-solving, progress appraisal and adjustments, Emotional Intelligence, etc. Several colleagues have already put in requests to use it in their future programs.
