Activity Overview
These Chiji Processing Dice are an easy-to-use tool for the novice experiential educator and a fun addition to the experienced educator’s processing and activity review collection and methods.
Chiji is a Chinese word that means “key moment,” but within the definition is both the moment itself and the person’s reaction to that moment.
Chiji Processing Dice are an example of participant-directed processing: they help shift some of the responsibility for successful processing, and therefore deeper learning, from the facilitator to the participants during a processing session, or activity review, as part of the Kolb reflective cycle process.
The sequence of fact-finding, analysis and feelings, and transference not only takes participants through a progression for processing a specific event, but also presents an overall lesson on proper processing.
It also therefore provides a useful metacognitive activity in processing learning, modelling good practice and helping participants to self-process in future.
These 3 x question dice are designed to be rolled in sequential order: red, orange, then yellow, and the blue control die accompanies them each time.
For example rolling the red and blue dice initially could provide the instruction for each person on each side of the blue die roller to answer the initial red question: What did you think was the purpose?
A second roll might provide the instruction for the blue dice roller to pick a person to answer the red question ‘ What was your contribution?’ .
These basic fact-finding questions on the red die are followed by the analysis and feeling questions on the orange die, and finally the transference questions on the yellow die.
